3 Effective Wheelchair Workouts
While many people might assume that being in a wheelchair completely limits your ability to exercise or work out, this is not the case. As a matter of fact, there are many great exercises out there that can be done from a wheelchair! Not only do these exercises allow you to build strength and stamina, but they can also help with potential shoulder and arm pain that may come with using a wheelchair.
If you are looking for ways to improve your upper body strength, mobility, or overall quality of life, then you have come to the right place! Here are a few sample exercises that you can try, all while being in your wheelchair.
Lat Pull Downs
This exercise is great for strengthening your back and upper body, in addition to stabilizing your core! All you need to complete this movement is a resistance band, preferably with handles. With your resistance band above your head, pull down on each side and bring your elbows towards the side of your body. Repeat this motion between 10-15 times and see your back strength increase!

Upper Body Ergometer
If you’ve never heard of one before, an
upper body ergometer is like a bicycle for your arms! It’s a great way to increase strength while also giving you a cardiovascular workout. This machine can be found in most gyms, and 15-20 minutes will have you breaking a sweat and feeling amazing.
Shoulder Openers
This exercise is more of a stretch and is a great tool either at the beginning or the end of your workout. You can use a multitude of different equipment for this exercise, ranging from a PVC pipe to a resistance band to a dish towel. All you have to do is hold both sides and raise it above your head, being sure to keep your arms straight. You can stretch behind your head, in front of you, or to either side. This will stretch your shoulder and chest muscles while also building stability!
