Organize your suitcase before travel

Make sure the items you will need during travel are easily accessible such as wallet, ID, boarding passes, passport (if necessary), headphones, and any electronic devices you may want to use.

In 1960 the first Paralympic sports were played in Rome with numerous sports, athletes, and countries participating. Since then Para Sports has continued to grow and evolve internationally!

History of some of these sports

Tennis:

The history of wheelchair tennis dates back to 1976 when former US freestyle skier Brad Parks developed it. The sport grew in the 1980s as France became the first country in Europe to put together a specific chair to play the game. Wheel Chair Tennis made its first appearance in the Paralympics in 1992.

Swimming:

Para-swimming was featured in the first-ever Paralympics in 1960 with 77 swimmers and 15 countries. More recently 74 countries and 604 swimmers competed in the 2020 Paralympics. The overall objective of Para Swimming is to cover the given distance in a lesser amount of time than the other opponents.

Basketball:

The history of Wheelchair Basketball dates back to 1946 when a World word II veteran developed it. The simple adaptations and slight rule variations allowed it to spread nationally and even internationally!

The objective of the game is to score the most points in the opposing team’s basket. The team with the most points by the time the clock expires wins. As the name suggests, wheelchair basketball is an adaptation of the able-bodied version.

Lat Pull Downs

This exercise is great for strengthening your back and upper body, in addition to stabilizing your core! All you need to complete this movement is a resistance band, preferably with handles. With your resistance band above your head, pull down on each side and bring your elbows towards the side of your body. Repeat this motion between 10-15 times and see your back strength increase!

Scout Out The Airports Ahead Of Time

Most airports have interactive maps available these days so you can see where all the important things are. But in order to really get a good sense of the terrain, you might want to hop onto YouTube and type “airport walkthrough” into the search bar. For example, here’s a comprehensive walkthrough of Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson International Airport . These are usually done by travel bloggers, so you’ll get to see the airport through the eyes of somebody who physically walked through the same airport you’ll be walking to. Call The Airline In Advance And Inform Them Of Your Wheelchair Status

By law, every airline is required to provide special assistance for handicapable individuals. Apply the brakes on your wheelchair when stationary

Maybe you’re sitting still now, and maybe your wheelchair is perched on a level floor, but you never know when someone might get careless and bump into you. As is the case with motor vehicles, it’s considered a best practice to make sure your brakes are on when you aren’t moving to ensure that you stay that way. Whenever possible, make sure that the hand that isn’t applying or releasing the brake is holding onto something to ensure balance.

Practice moving up and down ramps in your wheelchair

Wheeling yourself up and down a ramp may seem pretty easy, but some new wheelchair users do get taken by surprise the first time they do so out in the open. There’s nothing worse than underestimating the speed your wheelchair could pick up rolling down a ramp inside a building, not being able to stop yourself, and crashing into someone holding a hot cup of coffee. Keep your center of gravity at all times

3 Ways to Make Your Bathroom Wheelchair Accessible

If you happen to require the assistance of a wheelchair to get around, you’re undoubtedly familiar with the natural difficulties that arise when you need to relieve yourself. But there’s no reason to worry. There are plenty of measures you (and your loved ones) can take to create a special, wheelchair-accessible restroom that makes going to the bathroom easier than you may have thought was possible.

In particular, Custom Care Carriage recommends you take three measures in order to facilitate a true wheelchair-accessible restroom in your home.

A wide, easily accessible doorway

In order for a wheelchair to be able to maneuver through a doorway with at least a couple of inches to spare, the doorway should be at least three feet wide. If it’s possible to make the entrance any wider than that, by all means, feel free to do so. But three feet wide (36 inches) is considered the standard minimum width of a doorway for a handicap-accessible bathroom.

Width, though, is just half the battle. The doorway must be lined up correctly with a hallway or installed as a part of a room. A wheelchair’s wheels aren’t really meant to turn sharply, so if the doorway is situated in a way that the wheelchair user has to angle his or her wheelchair hard in order to turn into and through the doorway, it adds an unnecessary degree of difficulty for the person to do something that should be as simple as possible.

The more handlebars, the better

The physics of getting up onto a toilet seat and around in a shower can be difficult for someone with limited mobility. That’s what handlebars are for.

As a bare minimum safety measure, Custom Care Carriage recommends the usage of handlebars on the walls beside the toilet. We also recommend installing an extra set of handlebars onto the sides of the toilet itself, as this will make it much easier for one to get on and off the toilet. Additionally, a set of handlebars inside a shower is a necessity to keep one from slipping on the wet floor, but on top of that, an extra handlebar or two on or right beside the shower door will make getting in and out of the shower much easier .

A controllable shower-head

Sometimes, for one reason or another, it’s necessary to move the showerhead and change the pressure level of the water that shoots out. As such, it’s imperative that a wheelchair-accessible bathroom comes with a showerhead that is low, so that a person with limited mobility can access it, and adjustable.

For example, sometimes the initial spurt of water that shoots out of the showerhead is extremely cold. Perhaps the temperature dial was turned up fairly warm, but maybe the water needs a few moments to truly heat up. In the meantime, the showerhead should be located in a place where a handicapped individual can reach it and aim the water away so that he or she doesn’t have to risk hypothermia!

In most cases, it’s probably best to simply remove the grass in a given area and install a concrete path that circles the perimeter of your house.

The key to installing this concrete path is to find the happy medium in terms of its width. When people have limited mobility, they can often feel confined or restricted to their homes. It’s the nature of that kind of limitation. In those circumstances, it becomes critical to get out of the house and remember that there is more than just those four walls. This is something we’ve all been dealing with recently. The Most Common Disabilities

The most common disabilities for Americans above the age of 18 are related to movement and independent living. Add to this that a large number of these Americans are not living in facilities to provide care and you will see why it is we do what we do. The highest rates of disability in America occur in the older parts of our population. Almost half of people 75 and older have a disability, with that rate dropping to about a quarter between the ages of 65 and 74. Those are all good things and worth being excited over, but there is more to Memorial Day than just the fun of a new season. I

n 1971 Memorial Day became a federal holiday. Its roots stem all the way back to Charleston, South Carolina as an organized procession by free slaves to consecrate a burial site for Union dead. The site of that first ceremony is now known as Hampton Park, right in the heart of the peninsula. Although many cities claim to be the first to celebrate the day, the meaning remains the same. This is the day when we take time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their nation.

Today it’s estimated that around 85,000 veterans are in wheelchairs as a result of combat-related wounds, accidents, or disease. We’ve always been passionate about helping people in wheelchairs get to their appointments safely and securely, with a degree of dignity that’s second to none. But May is a time when we remember just how much this means to those heroes who served our country in its times of need.
