Five ways to make your wheelchair more comfortable

July 13, 2021
The human body was not constructed in a manner that is naturally compatible with wheelchairs. The unfortunate reality is that a wheelchair is a necessity for those with limited mobility, but not until recently were wheelchairs adjusted for comfortability for users.

Of course, nowadays, accessories are considered a natural component of most necessities, which means that there’s no reason that your wheelchair shouldn’t be comfortable. No longer is it considered acceptable for someone who requires wheelchair assistance to complain of stiffness or aches simply because that’s what happens when one rides in a wheelchair for extended periods of time.

Here are five avenues we recommend you explore to boost the comfortability level of your wheelchair.

A cushioned seat

There’s no reason to feel like you’re sitting on a hard, wooden bench when you could feel like you’re sitting on a soft couch. Though some wheelchairs still do have hard seats, this is probably the easiest custom adjustment to make. If your wheelchair seat is relatively hard, there are no shortage options to eschew this effect, ranging from ROHO cushions to common household items such as pillows and towels.

Lumbar support

A person’s lumbar area, located in the lower back, is one that most frequently suffers from extended wheelchair use without support. Luckily, lumbar support is fairly easy to apply to any wheelchair. Lumbar support seat attachments are readily available in stores these days; if you’re looking for a quick and dirty way to do it, a rolled-up towel or pillow can do the trick too.

Adjustable footrests

The position of your feet might not be the most widely considered component of your comfort level in a wheelchair, but it can make all the difference in the world. Even in a position that you feel comfortable at first, remaining locked in that position for hours can cause rigidity in your legs and back. We all need to move around to some degree and having footrests that you can adjust whenever you want are critical to keeping your body from stiffening up.

Cushioned armrests

Wheelchairs aren’t primarily designed for people with physical disabilities among their arms, but there’s no reason a wheelchair user’s arms shouldn’t be kept comfortable, too. Many wheelchairs come equipped with at least some level of cushioning on the armrests, but if yours doesn’t and you don’t want to pay for a new one quite yet, shirts or towels can suffice in the interim.

A Jay backrest

Jay's backrests are among the newer features that have been added to wheelchairs, and they’re growing in popularity because of their versatility. These adjustable backrests are made of soft, foam cushions and are adjustable simply by resting your back against them. They curve to the shape and pattern of your back, so the more you rest your back against them, the more familiar with your back they become and the more support they will offer.

Medical transportation is more than a logistical service—it is a deeply human experience. For patients facing illness, recovery, aging, or disability, the journey itself can be emotionally and physically taxing. Medical appointments often come with uncertainty, discomfort, or anxiety, and transportation can either ease that burden or add to it. That is why compassionate medical transportation plays a critical role in patient comfort, dignity, and overall well-being. At Custom Care Carriage , drivers are not simply responsible for operating vehicles. They are entrusted with supporting patients during moments of vulnerability—when patience, understanding, and calm presence matter most. Through empathy, attentiveness, and respectful care, drivers help transform transportation into a reassuring and supportive part of the healthcare journey rather than an added source of stress.

Aging brings wisdom, perspective, and resilience—but it can also introduce new challenges that affect independence and daily living. One of the most overlooked yet powerful supports for seniors is elderly transportation services. Reliable transportation does more than move someone from one place to another; it directly influences emotional health, physical well-being, social connection, and overall quality of life. For many older adults, no longer driving can feel like a loss of freedom. Missed medical appointments, isolation from friends, and reduced access to community activities can quietly diminish well-being over time. At Custom Care Carriage , transportation is treated as a form of care—designed to support seniors with dignity, safety, and compassion at every stage of aging.
