May is a month that holds a special meaning for Americans. Towards the end of the month comes Memorial Day. For most of us, we have memories of barbecues, pools, and the beginning of Summer. n 1971 Memorial Day became a federal holiday. Its roots stem all the way back to Charleston, South Carolina as an organized procession by free slaves to consecrate a burial site for Union dead. The site of that first ceremony is now known as Hampton Park, right in the heart of the peninsula. Although many cities claim to be the first to celebrate the day, the meaning remains the same. This is the day when we take time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their nation.
