The four best places to travel around the world in 2022
In our previous two blog posts, we talked about the best, most wheelchair-accessible places to travel in the eastern and the western United States. Today, though, we’re asking all you handicapable individuals out there to put on your adventure hats, because it’s time to complete our three-part handicap-accessible travel guide with the list of four best places to travel outside the country!
Barcelona, Spain is known for its wheelchair-friendly infrastructure
The entire city of Barcelona was either built or renovated to particularly cater to those with limited mobility, and that makes it an excellent tourist destination for handicapable individuals . With ramps at nearly every street corner, wheelchair-accessible subways, and yes, even some wheelchair-accessible beaches, Barcelona is an excellent place for those in wheelchairs to visit. Not to mention the fact that there’s so much to see there! From Sagrada Familia to Las Ramblas to the world-famous FC Barcelona soccer (or football) club, you’re sure to have a great time in Catalonia’s capital.

London, England, is one of the most wheelchair-accessible cities in Europe
London is home to all sorts of symbols of ancient hierarchy and royalty, and it just so happens to be one of the easiest cities for handicapable individuals to get around in Europe. Most taxis and buses have wheelchair ramps, and many of the cities’ attractions are wheelchair-accessible as well. Though the Tower of London isn’t particularly wheelchair-friendly, most other attractions in the city are, including the London Eye, the Cabinet War Rooms, the London Zoo, and the London Dungeons.
Melbourne, Australia is the wheelchair-accessible capital of Oceania
Perhaps the most famous thing in Melbourne is the Australian Open tennis tournament, typically held in January- which in Oceania is summertime (and, side note, probably the perfect time to go!) If tennis isn’t your thing, no need to worry; plenty of other wheelchair-accessible activities await, including the Eureka Skydeck, hot air balloon rides, safari tours, and for some individuals, yes- even wheelchair-accessible surfing!
The Cancun/Playa Del Carmen area in Mexico has plenty of wheelchair-accessible history
Two great cities that don’t require that long of a plane ride to get to with plenty of wheelchair-accessible activities? That’s the beauty of this region of Mexico. Cancun is known for its luxurious beaches and resorts, and it is certainly more wheelchair-accessible than the average city in Mexico, but Playa Del Carmen - about an hour away from Cancun- has the history. The latter city has all sorts of ancient Mayan archaeological sites to check out including Chichen Itza and Tulum, and for the most part, handicapable individuals won’t have a problem getting around them. For those individuals in wheelchairs who love their history, there may never come a better opportunity to get such an in-depth, bird’s eye view of ancient ruins.
