Three ways to help make your home wheelchair accessible

If you’ve been to public parks, malls, or even Williams Brice Stadium, chances are that you’ve seen some special design features laid out to make life easier for physically handicapped guests. Between special parking spaces, ramps, elevators, and special seating arrangements, large-scale areas of public interest are designed to make everybody feel welcome, regardless of their mobility status.

That’s all great, but most handicap-friendly amenities that are in place in public spaces aren’t quite so easy to implement in your own house. That can be a real problem if you or someone you’re living with is living a large portion of his or her life in a wheelchair. So what can you do to make your home just as easily accessible to those individuals who may be limited in their mobility?

Here are three of our top picks:

Install a stairlift between floors

The personal equivalent of an elevator, the stairlift is an absolute necessity if you live in a multi-story house or apartment. All a person has to do is sit in the chair, push a button on a remote, and they’ll be transported between floors without exerting any effort from their legs. Best of all, a stairlift doesn’t take up anywhere as much space as an elevator, meaning you won’t have to redesign multiple layers of your house in order to install one.

Stairlifts don’t come cheap- you can generally expect to pay around $2,000 for one- but the alternatives are either moving to a new home, which takes time and money that you likely don’t have, or moving everything that the handicapped person needs all onto one floor. Since neither of those options is practical, it’s best to invest in a stairlift and ensure that the wheelchair-bound individual has a reliable method of accessing multiple floors.

Add a wheelchair ramp to your front door or porch

In very few houses is it possible to enter or exit without having to take at least one step up or down. On top of that, many houses are built above ground to begin with, meaning that there are a few additional steps between the driveway or ground level and the floor of the house’s ground-level story.

For a wheelchair-bound person to get to enjoy the wonders that lay beyond his or her front door, a ramp becomes a critical accessory to the home. Depending on the ramp’s length, it could cost anywhere from $500 to $1000. But in terms of erecting a permanent gateway between the comfort of one’s place of dwelling and the adventures that await beyond it, its value is immeasurable.

Install multiple sets of handlebars in the bathroom

In truth, there isn’t a bad place to install a handlebar in a bathroom that’s used frequently by someone in a wheelchair. The most critical places to do so are inside the shower or bathtub, to prevent the person from slipping on the soapy water that surrounds him or her, as well as just outside of the shower or tub so that the handicapped individual can safely get out.

But it’s also a good idea to install some handlebars near the toilet to make it easier for someone in a wheelchair to be able to his or her business. Some adjustable handrails can be equipped to the toilet for this same purpose. And you can even add some handlebars beside a mirror or medicine cabinet to help a wheelchair-bound person reach something or momentarily raise himself or herself up.

Medical transportation is more than a logistical service—it is a deeply human experience. For patients facing illness, recovery, aging, or disability, the journey itself can be emotionally and physically taxing. Medical appointments often come with uncertainty, discomfort, or anxiety, and transportation can either ease that burden or add to it. That is why compassionate medical transportation plays a critical role in patient comfort, dignity, and overall well-being. At Custom Care Carriage , drivers are not simply responsible for operating vehicles. They are entrusted with supporting patients during moments of vulnerability—when patience, understanding, and calm presence matter most. Through empathy, attentiveness, and respectful care, drivers help transform transportation into a reassuring and supportive part of the healthcare journey rather than an added source of stress.

Aging brings wisdom, perspective, and resilience—but it can also introduce new challenges that affect independence and daily living. One of the most overlooked yet powerful supports for seniors is elderly transportation services. Reliable transportation does more than move someone from one place to another; it directly influences emotional health, physical well-being, social connection, and overall quality of life. For many older adults, no longer driving can feel like a loss of freedom. Missed medical appointments, isolation from friends, and reduced access to community activities can quietly diminish well-being over time. At Custom Care Carriage , transportation is treated as a form of care—designed to support seniors with dignity, safety, and compassion at every stage of aging.
